Vienna unemployment jumps
Baku, January 9 (AZERTAC). Unemployment in Vienna rose sharply last month, according to latest figures.
The jobless rate rose 5.1 per cent year on year to 84,728 in December, the Labour Market Service (AMS) reported today (Mon).
It said the number of people in training had risen from 8,619 in December 2008 to 26,107 in December 2009.
AMS said the increase in unemployment had affected men and women almost equally, with the increase for men 5.1 per cent or 2,611 and for women 5.2 per cent or 1,510. As of the end of last month, 54,198 men and 30,530 women were unemployed in the Austrian capital.
The increase among people aged 25 to 44 was 4.2 per cent, 5.6 per cent among those older than 45 and 7.5 per cent among those younger than 24.
At the same time, the number of young people looking for apprenticeships declined by 260 year on year to 1,003, and the number of available apprenticeships rose by 37 to 256.
AMS added that the number of available jobs registered with it had risen by 432 year on year to 3,156 - an increase of 15.9 per cent.
The number of long-term unemployed or those who have been without a job for at least a year fell 199 year on year to 709, AMS added.
The news comes just days after a top economic think tank claimed part-time work regimes saved 8,400 jobs last year.
The Institute for Economic Research (Wifo) said in its monthly report in late December that continuation of part-time work would be necessary until demand increased.
It added that average job growth of two per cent annually between 2006 and 2008 had been followed by a reduction of 1.3 per cent in the number of jobs last year on the back of the worst worldwide recession in 50 years. It said the situation in 2010 would not be much better.
