AZERBAIJAN`S REPUBLIC DAY MARKED IN MALTA
Baku, June 11 (AZERTAC). The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Italy with concurrent accreditation in Malta and San-Marino has organized, for the first time, in Malta an official reception to mark 28 May - Republic Day.
The event brought together President of Malta George Abela, ministers, parliamentarians, businessmen, journalists, diplomats and others.
Azerbaijan`s ambassador to Malta Emil Karimov briefed the participants on the history of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Touching upon Azerbaijan-Malta relationship, the Ambassador noted “the two countries have great potential to boost bilateral ties”.
He also told of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict saying 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s territories were occupied by Armenia with more than one million Azerbaijanis forcibly driven out from their homelands.
According to the diplomat, “thanks to President Ilham Aliyev`s expedient policy, Azerbaijan has become a leader in the South Caucasus region”.
Addressing the event, President of Malta George Abela extended his best wishes to the Azerbaijani people and President Ilham Aliyev.
The President noted Azerbaijan has old history and rich culture, and that the country has contributed much to world literature and art.
He praised the Azerbaijani people`s determination to protect their independence.
According to the President, “celebration of Azerbaijan`s Republic Day in Malta for the first time would contribute to developing bilateral ties”.
During the event, the participants saw a documentary on Azerbaijan. They were also handed over books featuring the country.
