Beshikdag Church
Baku, March 14, AZERTAC
One of the most striking and ancient monuments Beshikdagh Church is located in Aghdam district, near the village of Gizil Kangarli. The church, built in the style of Caucasian Albanian architecture, dates back to the 4th-7th centuries.
The monument is of early medieval churches from the period of Caucasian Albania. The history of the foundation of the church dates back to the middle of the 7th century and is shrouded in various legends and traditions. According to one of them, the construction of the church belongs to the Albanian (Caucasian Albania) prince Vache II of the Arshakid dynasty: "Vache II built a cruciform monastery, the head of which is now completely destroyed." The church was built from large hewn blocks of local milky limestone using lime mortar. Cruciform in plan, it belongs to the early Albanian small cross-domed, three-apse churches.
