AWARENESS-RAISING ON SECTION 907 SHOULD BE CONTINUED, CONGRESSMAN BILL SCHUSTER
Baku, 29 July (AZERTAC). There is the need to continue raising the awareness of US congressmen on the section 907. The number of members of the US Congressional Azerbaijan caucus should be increased to 100-120 people in order to intensify efforts towards repealing the section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, congressman of Pennsylvania and chairman of the US Congressional Azerbaijan Bill Schuster said in Washington at the briefing organized by the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce.
Addressing the political and business leaders in Washington, Bill Schuster highlighted the significance of extremely favorable strategic position and natural resources of Azerbaijan for the global security.
Congressman said that his January 2008 visit to Azerbaijan completely changed his idea about this country. Rapid development and reforms he witnessed as well as meeting with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev made Mr. Schuster convinced of the fact that Azerbaijan does not wish to be the “country of energy resources” only. Due to the oil revenues, Azerbaijan diversifies its economy, also moves ahead to develop science, education, culture and other spheres.
Congressman B. Schuster outlined that the process of building and strengthening democracy is one of the important parts of the American-Azerbaijani relations. But this is a very complex and long process.
Schuster thanked Azerbaijani ambassador to the USA Yashar Aliyev for his efforts to develop cooperation. He also emphasized the need for exchange programs. According to US congressman, the State of Pennsylvania and Azerbaijan are working to expand education exchange programs and trade ties.
