Azerbaijan and Mexico sign memorandum on diaspora cooperation

Fuad Muradov, Chairman of the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has paid a working visit to the United Mexican States. The visit was marked by a series of important meetings and events.
The Chairman and the Committee staff first visited the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Mexico, where they paid tribute to National Leader Heydar Aliyev by laying a wreath at his bust.
As part of the event, a video report documenting the National Leader’s 1982 official visit to Mexico was presented, highlighting the lasting significance of that historic trip.
The delegation later visited the Mexico–Azerbaijan Friendship Park, located on Paseo de la Reforma in the heart of Mexico City. This park is widely regarded as a symbol of the warm and friendly relations between the two nations.
A primary highlight of the visit was a meeting held at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Chairman met with Tatiana Clouthier, Head of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, where they emphasized the dynamic growth of Azerbaijan’s diaspora policy during Ilham Aliyev’s presidency. The two sides discussed their respective approaches to engaging citizens living abroad and exchanged views on various matters of mutual interest.
The Chairman provided an overview of the history, activities, and major projects of the Committee, noting that Azerbaijani communities abroad have unified around national values and have become an important element of the country’s “soft power.” He further noted that 32 Azerbaijan Houses have been established across 20 countries, along with nearly 100 weekend schools, and that these projects have reached hundreds of thousands of compatriots, supporting the successful integration of Azerbaijanis living abroad and fostering their positive contributions to the socio-political life of their host countries.
Tatiana Clouthier, in turn, noted that her institution has carried out extensive work to protect the rights of Mexican migrants living abroad, preserve their national identity, and support entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on encouraging women in business and assisting with children’s education. She mentioned that the Mexican government places immense importance on diaspora policy, given that approximately 11 million Mexicans live in the United States alone.
The meeting was attended by Seymur Fataliyev, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Mexico, along with embassy staff. The session concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, through the Institute for Mexicans Abroad.
This landmark document envisions strengthening support for both Azerbaijani and Mexican communities abroad, protecting their rights and interests, and establishing cooperation mechanisms across various fields. Under the framework of the memorandum, the parties plan to hold regular consultations, expand the exchange of information and expertise, and organize joint projects and training programs. The document reinforces the institutional foundations for diaspora cooperation between the two countries and creates a basis for broader initiatives in the future.
Overall, this visit and the signed memorandum make a significant contribution to the development of Azerbaijan–Mexico relations while opening new opportunities for more effective and coordinated diaspora activities.
