`Azerbaijan attaches great importance to relations with NATO`
Baku, July 6 (AZERTAC). “Azerbaijan attaches great importance to relations with NATO,” said first deputy speaker of Milli Majlis, head of Azerbaijani delegation in NATO PA Ziyafat Asgarov at the meeting with James Appathurai, NATO Secretary General`s Special Representative for Southern Caucasus and Central Asia.
Asgarov said Azerbaijan successfully cooperates with NATO in fighting terrorism within the “Partnership for Peace” and “Individual Partnership” programs. He underlined Azerbaijan closely participates in restoration of peace and security in Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
On Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Asgarov said as a result of the conflict, 20% of Azerbaijani lands were occupied by Armenians and more than one million people became refugees and IDPs. “Armenia ignores resolutions of the UN Security Council. NATO must apply all efforts to stop Armenia`s aggressive policy,” said Asgarov.
James Appathurai hailed relations between Azerbaijan and NATO. On Azerbaijan`s achievements, Apparathurai expressed his congratulations on the country`s election as a non-permanent member to the UN Security Council. He thanked Azerbaijan for supporting Afghanistan adding Azerbaijan is a reliable partner of NATO. He underlined NATO was keen on deepening relations with Azerbaijan.
On Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Apparathurai noted the problem must be solved within the norms and principles of the international law.
