AZERBAIJAN PRESIDENT ATTENDS OPENING OF EUROPEAN WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Baku, April 13 (AZERTAC). President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has today attended the opening ceremony of the European freestyle, Greco-Roman and women`s freestyle wrestling championship at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex.
The Head of State - President of the National Olympic Committee - was accompanied by first lady Mehriban Aliyeva.
The championship has involved a total of 383 wrestlers from 36 countries, including 21 from Azerbaijan.
The ceremony featured a moment of silence in memory of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his spouse as well as Poland`s senior state and government officials who were killed in a plane crash in Smolensk, Russia, last Saturday.
Speakers at the opening ceremony included Azerbaijan`s minister of youth and sports Azad Rahimov, President of International Wrestling Federation Association Raphael Martinetti and head of European Committee of Wrestling Associations Tzeno Tzenov.
President of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation Fazil Mammadov announced the championship open.
The tournament featured final bouts in four weight categories.
