BAKU HOSTS 49TH MEETING OF UNWTO COMMISSION FOR EUROPE
Baku, March 26 (AZERTAC). The 49th meeting of the UNWTO commission for Europe was held here on Tuesday.
The meeting brought together some 70 delegates from 40 countries.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfaz Garayev hailed the fact that the UNWTO commission meeting had been held in Baku. According to him, adoption of documents is important for defining the ways of tourism development.
The Minister updated participants on the tourism potential of Azerbaijan, accomplishments achieved in this sector, adding over 1 million tourists visited Azerbaijan in 2008 alone. Garayev noted Azerbaijan has been UNWTO member since 2001. He noted Azerbaijan wants to host one of UNWTO General Assembly`s meetings.
Director General of Cyprus Tourism Organization, chairperson of the UNWTO commission for Europe Phoebe Katsouri, said the aim of the meeting is to discuss joint efforts to reduce the impact of the global crisis on the tourism sector in the world
On the UNWTO technical seminar held in Baku, Secretary General ad interim Taleb Rifai said it will contribute to better planning of work in the future.
The event discussed tourism potential of participating states, existing problems.
Meeting participants decided to conduct the 18th meeting of UNWTO General Assembly and 50th meeting of the commission in Kazakhstan and adopted the action plan for 2010-2011.
