Chairman of Ombudsman office meets GRETA President
Baku, May 17 (AZERTAC). A meeting with a delegation led by Nicolas le Coz, President of the Council of Europe`s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings has been arranged at the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan.
The delegation was welcomed by Chairman of Ombudsman Office Aydin Safikhanli who briefed them on the activity of the organization, as well as mandate and activity of the Commissioner directed towards protection of rights of various population groups.
He also said that the Commissioner for Human Rights was designated as the National Preventive Mechanism by the Decree of Azerbaijan`s President.
“On 8 August 2011, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan signed a Decree on implementation of the Constitutional Law with the new amendments that entered into force. According to these amendments, the Commissioner “fulfils the functions of the National Preventive Mechanism in accordance with the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment,” as well as the Commissioner supervises over execution of duties by the information holding state bodies, municipalities and state officials in accordance with the requirements of the Law of the of the Republic of Azerbaijan on “Access to information” he added.
In his part, the GRETA President highly praised activity and mandate of the Commissioner in all fields, including in human trafficking.
