Facebook celebrates its birthday
Baku, February 5 (AZERTAC). The world’s biggest social networking site is celebrating its ninth birthday today. The network was created by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates studying at Harvard University, and launched on 4 February 2004.
Primarily, the site was called “The Facebook” and was available for only students at Harvard University. In September 2006, the site became available for all internet users at the age of 13 who have an email address.
Today the audience of the social network exceeds 1 billion users. About a million people use Facebook in Azerbaijan.
The network allows the user to create a profile with a photo and information about himself, invite friends, communicate with them, change his status, leave messages on his own and others’ pages, upload photos and videos, create groups (communities of interest), etc.
Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users, more than half of them using Facebook on a mobile device. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People From Work" or "Close Friends".
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University.
