ISRAELI PRESIDENT VISITS ASHKENAZI SYNAGOGUE IN BAKU
Baku, June 29 (AZERTAC). President of Israel Shimon Peres visited Monday the Ashkenazi synagogue where he met with members of the Jewish community in Azerbaijan.
The President expressed satisfaction with the fact that “such a synagogue exists in Azerbaijan”.
Head of the Mountain Jews community Semen Ikhilov described the Israeli President’s visit to Azerbaijan as an “important historical event”. He noted Jews who settled in Azerbaijan 2700 years ago live in peace. According to him, they never faced anti-Semitism in Azerbaijan.
Head of the European Jewish community of Azerbaijan Gennady Zelmanovich said Azerbaijan was an example of tolerance for some countries.
Boris Simanduyev, head of the “Krasnaya Sloboda” Jewish community in the country`s Guba region said “President Ilham Aliyev take care of them as national leader Heydar Aliyev did”.
Israeli President Shimon Peres, in turn, thanked President Ilham Aliyev for the care.
He praised the fact people of different religions co-exist in Azerbaijan peacefully.
The President pointed out Azerbaijan develops rapidly though 20 percent of its territories had been occupied. He called Azerbaijan “real friend and reliable partner”.
Peres also underlined his current visit would contribute to boosting Azerbaijan-Israel friendship even more.
