PACE TO DISCUSS DEPRIVATION OF VOTING RIGHTS OF THE ARMENIAN DELEGATION
Baku, January 27 (AZERTAC). Today, the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in its winter session in Strasbourg will decide whether to recommend the Assembly to suspend the voting rights of its Armenian members.
As noted on the official site of the Organization, in the second day of session the parliamentarians will discuss execution by Armenia of the Resolutions 1609 and 1620, accepted by PACE in April 2008.
The Committee considers unacceptable that people can be accused and deprived of freedom owing to the political reasons, and asks Assembly to suspend the vote of this delegation until the authorities clearly will not show the political will to settlement of this problem.
As known, the Armenian opposition since February 20, 2008 conducted in the center of Yerevan a protest action, showing discontent with results of presidential election on which Serzh Sarkisyan won. During the protest actions on March 1 the demonstrators clashed with representatives of the law-enforcement bodies, as a result of which ten persons were lost, over 200 wounded.
Earlier, the PACE has repeatedly threatened to impose such sanctions if the authorities of Armenia fail to comply with its resolutions on Armenia
On December 17 last year the PACE Monitoring Committee suggested to suspend the vote of the Armenian delegation during this session of Assembly.
