Park in the dark after vandals smash lampposts
Baku, November 5 (AZERTAC). “The light standards are permanently damaged,” said Bill Murphy, manager for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality parks and buildings.
While the original lights cost about $40,000, he said something sturdier is needed and that could cost between $60,000 and $70,000.
Murphy said the CBRM has security in the parks around Halloween.
He confirmed that at about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, security noticed a lamppost had been knocked over. While park employees were waiting for an electrician, culprits pelted them with rocks.
“I wasn`t told that verbally, but I did see a report to the effect,” Murphy said.
“Obviously they ran from there and later continued the destruction down further.”
Desiree Vassallo, spokeswoman for the Cape Breton Regional Police Service, said security in the park contacted police after witnessing four teenage boys running through the park and knocking down lampposts.
“They were seen on foot so it doesn`t appear anything else was used in the actual act of knocking them down.”
The suspects are all described as about 16 years old. One was wearing a blue hoodie while another had on a red hoodie and a black jacket. The others were wearing a green jacket, and a black and red jacket.
He said some upgrades to the park last year included a road and lampposts.
He said taxpayers should be upset because $720,000 from the three levels of government paid for the project.
The park — about a kilometre long — was built between 1983 and 1986, as an upgrade to the main sewage system.
The revitalization project began in 2008 and included recapping the trails, lighting, benches, garbage bins and landscaping.
