PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV RECEIVES LATVIAN MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENT
Baku, June 25 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev has received today Latvian Minister of Environment Raimonds Vejonis and his accompanying delegation.
Minister Vejonis pointed out an agreement on environmental cooperation that the Latvian and Azerbaijani governments had signed earlier today.
He noted the two countries cooperate in a number of fields, particularly financial and economic ones, adding the agreement will contribute to deepening bilateral relationship even more.
Raimonds Vejonis underlined the necessity of strengthening the environmental protection amid the global climate change.
President Ilham Aliyev said relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia increasingly expand covering more and more areas in addition to economic and political ones.
The Azerbaijani President noted the environmental protection is one of the key priorities for his country.
“Oil and gas-rich areas, including Absheron Peninsula and Caspian Sea coastal zone require a special approach from the point of view of ecological security,” said the President.
The Head of State stressed though oil has been produced in Absheron Peninsula for about two hundred years ecological issues there have not been given due attention.
“The Azerbaijani government plans to do a lot in this regard,” the President added.
