RUSSIAN INFORMATION AND CULTURE CENTER OPENS IN BAKU
Baku, March 12 (AZERTAC). The Russian Information and Culture Center has been officially inaugurated here today, with Foreign Ministers Elmar Mammadyarov of Azerbaijan and Sergey Lavrov of Russia in attendance.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lavrov described the event as “another step towards developing the bilateral humanitarian relations”.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of overall relationship between Azerbaijan and Russia.
“We place a particular emphasis on humanitarian relations. Recently both Azerbaijan and Russia hosted the years of culture of our countries.”
“But, of course, bilateral relations is not what we content ourselves with. We develop our relations within the CIS as well” the Russian FM added.
Lavrov said “we hope the work of the center will be interesting not only for Russian but also Azerbaijani citizens. Its doors will always be open for those interested.”
The Russian Foreign Minister also thanked the Azerbaijani government for assistance in opening the center.
Azeri FM Elmar Mammadyarov stressed nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev`s role in developing Azerbaijan-Russia humanitarian relations.
He said: “Today Russian language and culture are held in great respect in Azerbaijan. There are Russian schools in our country, we also have the Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theatre which is one of the lovely places of local people. Recently President Ilham Aliyev has inaugurated the Baku branch of the Moscow State University.”
Mammadyarov introduced Nargiz Pashayeva, Rector of the Moscow State University`s Baku branch, to Sergey Lavrov.
Afterwards the sides exchanged keepsakes. Azerbaijani parliamentarian, writer Elmira Akhundova presented her four-volume book about nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev to the Russian FM.
Mammadyarov and Lavrov then toured the center. Afterwards, the Russian FM chatted with members of the Russian community in Azerbaijan.
The inauguration ceremony saw attendance of Azerbaijani officials, diplomats as well as head of Baku and All-Caspian Orthodox Eparchy father Alexander, head of the Russian community in Azerbaijan Mikhail Zabelin and Ataman (head) of the Azerbaijani Cossacks Viktor Mereshkin.
