UN`s Brahim laments destruction of Syria
Baku, January 30 (AZERTAC). The Joint Special Envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahim, has told the UN Security Council that both sides to the conflict are systematically destroying that country.
Brahimi replaced Kofi Annan as chief mediator in the Syrian conflict last year. He met behind closed doors with the Council where he painted a grim picture of developments in Syria.
He briefed the council as several dozen bodies of young men shot in the head with their hands tied behind their backs, were discovered on a river bank in the northern city of Aleppo. The death toll may be as high as 80.
"Syria is being destroyed I sometimes say and of course the parties are very angry at me when I say that, objectively, they are co-operating to destroy Syria. Syria is being destroyed bit by bit and in destroying Syria, the region is being pushed into a situation that is extremely bad and extremely important for the entire world."
Brahimi told the council that a peace plan under the auspices of a Geneva declaration last year was too ambiguous and could no longer be implemented in its current form. He further told council members that it`s time for them to put aside their differences and act was now.
He has called on council to recalibrate the Geneva document by reaffirming Syria independence and territorial integrity while clarifying what powers a possible transitional government would have.
"The Security Council simply cannot continue to say, we are in disagreement, therefore let`s wait for better times, I think they have got to grapple with this problem now," adds Brahimi.
And as they grapple, the dead pile up.
Brahimi was to be hosted late last night by Russia for a private dinner along with the other permanent five members of the Council hoping to breach what has essentially become a dead end on Syria, in more ways than one.
