UZBEKISTAN AGAINST NEW RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE IN KYRGYZSTAN
Baku, 4 August (AZERTAC). Uzbekistan is against the deployment of a new Russian military base in southern Kyrgyzstan, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said Monday.
The Ministry said Russia`s plan to open a second military base in Kyrgyzstan would destabilize the wider Central Asian region.
“Uzbekistan sees no necessity... in implementing the plans to place an additional group of Russian military forces in Kyrgyzstan`s south,” according to the Ministry.
It said the Russian military presence could provoke further “militarization” and ethnic conflicts. “It could also lead to a resurgence of “radical extremist” forces who may destabilize the situation in the whole region”.
Kyrgyzstan this month gave the go-ahead to Moscow`s second base on its territory, close to the southern border with Uzbekistan.
