Its inhabitants are called "Bordelais" (for men) or "Bordelaise" (for women).
The city`s nicknames are "La perle d`Aquitaine", "La Belle Endormie" (Sleeping Beauty) in reference to the old center which had black walls due to pollution. Nowadays, this is not the case. In fact, a part of the city, Le Port de La Lune, was almost completely renovated.
Bordeaux is the world`s major wine industry capital. It is home to the world`s main wine fair, Vinexpo, while the wine economy in the metro area moves 14.5 billion euros each year. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble" of the 18th century.
Like Azerbaijanis, Bordelais are hospitable and kind. They are eager to learn about art, culture, music and history of other nations. In this sense, the exhibition “Cultural Treasures of Azerbaijan - the Pearl of Caucasus”, which officially opened in Bordeaux by Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, was a real gift for the city inhabitants. That was why Bordelais showed great interest in exhibits, including carpets, samples of copper and pottery products, music instruments characterizing the country`s ancient and rich history.
In the opening ceremony, first deputy of the city mayor Didier Cazabone and Azerbaijani ambassador Elchin Amirbayov made remarks.
They praised projects of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, especially “Cultural Treasures of Azerbaijan - the Pearl of Caucasus” in terms of promoting Azerbaijan in regions of France.

The orchestra was conducted by Fuad Ibrahimov. The concert program once more time proved how magnificent is Azerbaijani culture.
