Azerbaijan`s delegation attends 6th Worldwide Air Transport Conference in Canada
Baku, April 4 (AZERTAC). An Azerbaijani delegation led by director of the State Civil Aviation Administration Fuad Guliyev has participated in the 6th Worldwide Air Transport Conference of the ICAO in Montreal, Canada.
The Conference in Montreal brought together 1,500 delegates from 170 countries and 35 international organizations.
The ICAO hosts the conference approximately once a decade and uses the event to examine the biggest issues facing the aviation industry at the global level.
This year's conference focused on the economic viability of global air transport and participants discussed the consequences of surcharging airfare, passengers' rights, air transport security and the harmonization of global air navigation systems.
Despite this trend towards the positive, the industry remains a volatile one. While there were more than 80,000 flights a day on average in 2012, the financial health of global airlines remains precarious, according to the ICAO. Revenues for all carriers in all regions totaled $636 billion dollars last year, but profits were only $4.1 billion, or 0.6 per cent.
The European airline industry was the hardest hit in 2012, with airlines posting a net loss of $1.2 billion. Asia-Pacific carriers, on the other hand, saw $2.3 billion profit.
In parallel to the conference, the ICAO and the UNWTO signed a joint agreement asking states to reduce taxes and privilege royalties instead.
Passenger rights and consumer protection were also discussed during the conference and the ICAO is pressing for a more convergent and harmonized framework of regulation between states and regions regarding passengers.
In addition, price transparency was a topic of conversation. Recent regulations that have been initiated by some countries attempt to simplify price information, but there is no consistent regulation in place.
