UN MARKS UNIVERSAL CHILDREN`S DAY WORLDWIDE
The Universal Children`s Day is celebrated on November 20 internationally. The date 20 November marks the day on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on Rights of the Child, valid from 1990. Some 120 states including Azerbaijan are affiliated with the Convention. By resolution of 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children`s Day, to be observed as a day of promoting welfare of the children of the world.
In 2000, UNICEF and the world leaders outlined Millennium Development Goals to reduce infant mortality rate by the target date of 2015 in comparison with 1990. Meeting these goals will above all make critical improvements in their lives, and that depends on rational nutrition, medical care and compulsory vaccinations.
The last report by UNICEF stated that Azerbaijan has made progress in the direction of realization of fourth goal of the Millennium Development, implying the reduction of infant mortality by 2015.
