Mayor of the Hague: Local and regional governments must be recognized as fully-fledged levels of governance

Global challenges are forcing us to revise multilateral cooperation as an inclusive, multi-level and implementation-oriented system. While global systems stumble, a different kind of multilateralism is thriving. Driven by cities and regions, this system proves that cooperation rooted in proximity, solidarity, and deep inclusivity is stronger than ever, said Jan van Zanen, Mayor of the Hague, as he addressed the World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments under the theme “Local Leadership Shaping a Renewed Multilateralism” held as part of the WUF13.
According to the Mayor of the Hague, the global municipal movement demonstrates that cooperation between territories is not only possible but is capable of driving profound transformations.
"We urge the World Assembly to recognize local and regional governments as political actors. They must be valued as parties with the power to reshape global governance frameworks and drive the implementation of our shared commitments," he added.
