WUF13: Environmental and transportation infrastructure to be upgraded in Baku White City Project
Baku, May 19, AZERTAC
Within the framework of the 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13), a partnership has been launched between the Baku White City Project and the international engineering and design firm AtkinsRéalis.
The cooperation agreement was signed by Matthew Tribe, Buildings & Places Global Market Lead at AtkinsRéalis, and Rufat Javadov, Director of the Azerbaijan Development Company Baku White City Project.
The agreement envisions the development of road, transport, and engineering communication infrastructure in the Eastern Quarter of "Baku White City" based on green and sustainable urban principles.
Planned initiatives under the project include the implementation of advanced environmental standards, optimization of transport connectivity, construction of energy-efficient engineering networks, expansion of green zones, and the execution of pedestrian- and bicycle-oriented street designs. In addition, measures will be taken toward strengthening public transportation and managing resources efficiently.
In an interview with AZERTAC, Matthew Tribe, noted that the foundation of the project was laid as a result of the strategic decisions made by the President of Azerbaijan regarding environmental cleanup and restoration. "We have a nearly 20-year history of cooperation with our clients on this project. It began based on a highly ambitious vision to ecologically clean up one of the city's most polluted areas and reintegrate it back into the city," Tribe emphasized.
Matthew Tribe stated that WUF13 contributes to making cities more inclusive and sustainable. "WUF13 is a leading platform aimed at making cities better for everyone. One of the core themes of the forum is housing. The Baku White City Project presents an inclusive urban planning model by offering different residential formats for various social groups," the company official added.
According to Tribe, the Baku White City Project can also be considered an exemplary model for future urban planning initiatives. "It was an incredibly ambitious vision. WUF13 brings the goal of making cities more livable for everyone to the forefront. The Baku White City project contributes to these goals through its housing concepts designed for diverse social groups," Tribe added.
Farida Farag, Market Director Cities & Communities at AtkinsRéalis, told AZERTAC that the "Baku White City" project is not merely a master plan, but also an indicator of the country's strategic intent toward ecological transformation.
"This project aligns with the Azerbaijani President's initiatives regarding ecological transformation. An area that was once an industrial zone is transforming today into an example of sustainable urban planning and serves as a model for future projects," she noted.
