Francine Pickup: The crisis in the Middle East is negatively affecting the living conditions of millions of people
Baku, May 21, AZERTAC
“The ongoing crisis in the Middle East is exacerbating socio-economic problems in countries across the region and adversely affecting the living conditions of millions of people,” said Francine Pickup, Deputy Director in UNDP's Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, in her remarks at the event titled “The Middle East Crisis and Its Global Housing and Urban Impacts,” co-organized by UN-Habitat and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, held as part of WUF13.
She noted that the impacts of large-scale crises are long-term, and that even after a ceasefire, socio-economic consequences continue to be felt for many years.
“The ripple effects of this crisis will continue for an extended period across different regions of the world. Iran is currently among the countries experiencing the most significant socio-economic decline. It has been under sustained economic pressure due to sanctions, high inflation, and weakening purchasing power. The military escalation is further exacerbating the situation,” Francine Pickup added.
