Azerbaijani Deputy FM addresses OIC Foreign Ministers Council’s extraordinary meeting

On August 27, Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The meeting focused on the election of a new OIC Secretary-General, as well as issues concerning Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif.
The meeting commenced with the unanimous adoption of a relevant decision on the election of the new OIC Secretary-General. According to the decision, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mauritania and the sole candidate for the position, was elected as the new OIC Secretary-General.
Addressing the meeting, Azerbaijani Deputy FM Yalchin Rafiyev congratulated the newly elected Secretary-General on his appointment and expressed Azerbaijan’s full support for him during his tenure. The Deputy Foreign Minister also expressed gratitude to outgoing OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha for his effective efforts during his term in office.
Yalchin Rafiyev also touched upon the OIC’s prospects as an important international institution and the tasks ahead. Highlighting that Azerbaijan will host the OIC Summit in 2027 and assume the organization’s chairmanship, the Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized that Azerbaijan would work closely with the incoming Secretary-General to advance the organization’s interests and strengthen cooperation among OIC member states.
Regarding the Palestine issue, Deputy FM Rafiyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s unchanged and principled position, stressing the importance of respect for international law, as well as the assistance provided by Azerbaijan to the Palestinian people, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.
Rafiyev added that the official visit of Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa to Azerbaijan in July had contributed to fostering economic cooperation between the two countries.
