UN-Habitat: Housing crisis has become a global and systemic challenge
Baku, May 18, AZERTAC
“Today, approximately 3 billion people worldwide live in inadequate housing conditions. More than 1 billion people reside in slums, while over 300 million people face homelessness. This is no longer an isolated issue; it has become a systemic and global crisis,” stated Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), during a press conference held on the official opening of the 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13).
She noted that the challenges facing modern cities are interconnected and expose deep structural problems. According to the Executive Director, the issue extends beyond a shortage of housing and also encompasses inclusivity, opportunities, and human dignity.
Anacláudia Rossbach emphasized that while housing is an infrastructure issue, its effective management and financing are a shared responsibility of governments and international partners.
“Housing is a fundamental human right, and time is limited to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals,” she stressed.
