Baku, May 19, AZERTAC
Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, made the remarks at the event titled “WUF13 NGO Forum: Global Partnerships and Decision-Making” held in Baku.
He stated that Azerbaijan is carrying out large-scale restoration and reconstruction works in mine-contaminated territories and maintains close cooperation with civil society institutions in this process.
Highlighting that the Global South NGO Platform established within the framework of COP29 is already turning into a successful international initiative, Hikmet Hajiyev said the platform’s General Assembly was established this year and expressed optimism about its future development. He noted that challenges related to cities—rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate change—are already on the agenda of all states, adding that Azerbaijan is also affected by climate change.
Emphasizing Azerbaijan’s ancient urban planning traditions, he pointed to cities such as ancient Gabala as historical centers of trade, science, cooperation, and culture. He also noted that one of the key modern challenges is preserving cultural heritage alongside the development of modern cities.
