UN report: Half of future urban population growth to be concentrated in just seven countries
Baku, May 19, AZERTAC
“Seven countries will account for half of the world's urban population growth over the next 25 years. India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Bangladesh and Ethiopia will together add more than 500 million new urban residents between 2025 and 2050. This figure corresponds to more than half of the projected global urban population growth of 986 million over that period,” said Cheryl Sawyer, a representative of the UN Population Division, while presenting the World Urbanization Prospects 2025 at the session “Future urbanisation, how will your city change over the next decades,” as part of the WUF13.
Simultaneously, more than 3,000 cities around the world saw their populations decline between 2015 and 2025. More than a third of these cities are in China, and 17 percent are in India. According to the report, the size of cities does not guarantee their population growth: large cities such as Mexico City and Chengdu have experienced similar population declines.
