Azerbaijan discusses UN recommendations as it submits its first report on Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Baku, May 23 (AZERTAC). A roundtable has been held in Baku to discuss the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) concerning Azerbaijan’s first report on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The event was co-organized by Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman’s Office and the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population.
Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova noted the importance of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She said that by ratifying the convention Azerbaijan undertook to ensure and promote the implementation of human rights and major freedoms of persons with disabilities.
Minister of Labour and Social Protection of Population Salim Muslumov highlighted the CRPD recommendations.
The Minister noted that Azerbaijan was the first country in the South Caucasus to join the convention and draw up its annual report.
He said there were 530,000 people with disabilities in Azerbaijan, adding this constituted 5.6 percent of the country`s total population.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Policy Hadi Rajabli said the country had improved its national legislation related to the rights of disabled persons.
Participants in the roundtable included representatives of public bodies and non-governmental organizations.
