AZERBAIJANI FM MEETS WITH HIS SWEDISH COUNTERPART
J. Eliasson was OSCE mediator for Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1989-1990 and took an active part in achieving a cease-fire in 1994. During the meeting, the sides discussed the role of international organizations and world community’s efforts towards the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, prospects of bilateral relations, economic ties, European Union new neighborhood policy, role of Azerbaijan in the region, country’s relations with neighboring nations, and shared their views on UN reforms, processes in the region, Near East, including Lebanon crisis.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister said the embassy of Azerbaijan is expected to open in Sweden by the end of this year.
Development of economic ties, Swedish investment in Azerbaijan, organization of the joint business forums and establishment of the intergovernmental economic commission and other issues were high on the agenda of the meeting.
The sides highlighted a need to enhance the role of international organizations in finding peaceful solution to the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
J. Eliasson voiced his concern over the fire, which occurred in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and said he keeps this matter in the center of his attention.
The meeting also focused on the large-scale economic projects implemented by Azerbaijan and increasing political and economic power of the country in the international arena.
Head of Swedish Foreign Office highly assessed Azerbaijan’s efforts towards protection of human rights and development of democracy and country’s election as member of the UN Human Rights Committee.
The meeting was followed by the joint news conference.

On August 7, E. Mammadyarov got involved in the roundtable discussions organized by Svante E. Cornell, the research director of the joint center of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute and Silk Road Studies Program. The roundtable was attended by representatives of Sweden’s leading research centers, business circles and Foreign Ministry.
E. Mammadyarov answered the questions concerning the agenda, which included such issues as Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, country’s economic and political life, cooperation and security in the region.
In the end of the visit, E.Mammadyarov met with members of Azerbaijani society in Sweden and compatriots living in this country.
