European parliamentarians visit Azerbaijani State Committee on Work with Refugees and IDPs
Baku, January 15 (AZERTAC). Vice-chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee on Work with Refugees and IDPs Geray Farhadov met with Norwegian parliamentarian Karin S. Woldseth, Icelandic parliamentarian Ogmundur Jonasson and Finnish political figure, former PACE member Jaakko Laakso as part of their visit to Baku.
Touching upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Geray Farhadov said this issue was the priority for the country. He stressed that Armenia had occupied 20 % of the Azerbaijani territories and more than one million people became refugees.
Expressing his confidence on returning refugees and internally displaced people to their home, Farhadov noted that the support to Azerbaijan’s right position is gradually being increased thanks to purposeful policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev. He stated that this conflict was a threat not only to the South Caucasus, but also to the whole world, as Armenia is currently using Azerbaijan’s occupied territories for drug trafficking and training international terrorist groups.
The parliamentarians noted that they will hold several meetings during the visit, and said they are aware of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and its consequences and the fact that one out of every 10 people is refugee or IDP and regarded this conflict as a serious threat to the region.
The parliamentarians will today visit Aghdam region to meet IDPs.
