ICT sector registers great success in Azerbaijan in 2010
Baku, January 6 (AZERTAC). On the background of rapid socio-economic development of Azerbaijan Republic the year 2010, as well as for other sectors of the economy, was very successful for the sector of information and communications technologies (ICT) and postal sector. Thus, according to preliminary data, over the last year, proceeds from the ICT and postal sectors made 1, 158, 9 million manat, up 31.3% compared to 2009.
During 2010, a great deal of significant work has been done in the field of communications and information technologies, and great achievements were obtained.
Thus, full electronization of telecommunications network in regions was completed, modern electronic exchanges were installed and put into operation in most remote inhabited places in the country. In 2010, the number of mobile subscribers in the country grew roughly by 1,342,880 reaching 9,100, 000 subscribers, thereby the project “100 mobile users per 100 people” was implemented successfully.
Moreover, with the view of increasing the stability of international communications system of Azerbaijan and expanding the capacity of optical networks in the country, the construction of fiber-optic backbone Siyazan-Shabran-Guba-Samur was completed.
In 2010 the project “Development of financial services” realized in the country with financial support from the World Bank was implemented successfully in the country, and post offices began to render new banking and financial services.
In addition, as part of the activities carried out in the field of communications and information technologies, majority of regions of Azerbaijan were connected to the network AzDataCom, deployed as an alternative to the existing traditional network covering the whole country.
In 2010, significant steps were taken in the direction of placing into orbit first national telecommunications satellite of Azerbaijan, which is scheduled for IV quarter of 2012. Contracts were signed on the use of orbital position, production and launching the satellite.
During the accounting period, broadcasting digital television began in Baku, Sumgait, Absheron peninsula, Ganja, Lerik region and adjacent areas, as a result of which nearly 50% of the territory was covered with the possibility of digital broadcasting.
The necessary infrastructure was established for the organization of electronic signature.
Heydar Aliyev Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies have established regional centers of information technologies in cities Nakhchivan and Ganja for the disabled and the blind.
During the year, Internet prices in the country were reduced by 50%, as a result of which tariffs for Internet services in Azerbaijan are lower in comparison with other countries in the region.
A new phase of the project “National Computer” was launched in 2010, through which more than 10,000 high school and university teachers, students and schoolchildren were able to purchase computers equipped with licensed software on favorable terms.
As a result of work carried out, computers per 100 people in the country reached 14, the number of Internet users - 45, users of broadband access - 12.
