Nigar Arpadarai: Plastic pollution is one of the most visible signs of a wasteful development model
Baku, May 20, AZERTAC
“Azerbaijan has identified sustainable urban development, "green" economic growth, and environmental protection as top priorities. The ongoing large-scale reconstruction and development work in the liberated territories also creates crucial opportunities for applying modern sustainability principles, more efficient waste management systems, and "green" urban planning approaches,” said Nigar Arpadarai, the COP29 Climate High-Level Champion and Member of the Milli Majlis, during an event titled "Tackling Plastic Pollution: Promoting Liveable Cities and a Circular Economy," organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources as part of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
She stated that the cities of the future must not repeat the mistakes of the past: "Plastic pollution is one of the most visible signs of a wasteful development model. However, it is also an opportunity to rethink how we build our economies, how we consume, how we plan our cities, and how we cooperate across sectors and borders."
"If we achieve this, we will not only reduce pollution but also create healthier communities, greener economies, new jobs, stronger resilience, and a more dignified urban life for future generations. This requires collective leadership. Governments, international organizations, and the private sector cannot do this alone. However, through partnership, innovation, and political will, we can together transform this challenge into an opportunity leading to more sustainable and green cities," Nigar Arpadarai noted.
