PRESIDENTS OF AZERBAIJAN AND SWITZERLAND MAKE PRESS STATEMENT
Following the meeting in the presence of the two countries` delegations, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Pascal Couchepin of Switzerland made statements for media outlets on Monday.
“It is the Swiss President`s first visit to Azerbaijan in the history of bilateral relations. I am sure this visit will open a new chapter in bilateral relations. We have discussed strengthening of cooperation, mutual projects, investment opportunities, international issues, regional development and, of course, the outlook for the future. We are glad that Switzerland`s leading companies have been operating for a couple of years in our country. There are some ideas concerning some projects and expansion of their operations here,” said President Ilham Aliyev in his statement.
“We also discussed our energy cooperation and can see new opportunities for deepening ties. Azerbaijan is an energy-rich country. The production increases year by year. We have a modern and very effective transport infrastructure including oil and gas pipelines linking Azerbaijan with European markets. We consider Switzerland a potential partner in this work. We are glad that talks between the companies are underway and hopeful that these talks will bring good results,” President Aliyev added.
“I am very impressed by your country`s development. I want to highlight the Head of State`s and political leadership`s openness. Our meeting in the morning was very constructive. We shared the views on expanding economic cooperation. Representatives of Swiss companies applied to us for working in the construction and energy sector, and as Mr. President said, major projects are being implemented. Swiss companies are ready to invest in Azerbaijan because they believe in the future of Azerbaijan and region,” said the Swiss President Couchepin in his statement.
According to Couchepin, the discussions also revolved around the activity of the Minsk Group and Azerbaijan`s stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh. “We hope that the conflict will be resolved in the near future because it is important for the regional development,” he said.
The Swiss President noted the issues discussed also included cultural ties and upcoming presidential elections in Azerbaijan.
