WUF13: Transforming informal settlements and slums for housing construction worldwide VIDEO

“The issues of transforming informal settlements and slums were discussed as part of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.
Mikayil Jabbarov, Azerbaijan`s Economy Minister; Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat); Marie Huchzermeyer, Professor in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand and other speakers emphasized that informal settlements are a serious problem not only in less developed countries, but also in megacities. They noted that systematic outcomes have not been achieved in this area on a global scale. They stressed the importance of integrating this problem into national legislative and financial systems.
It was noted that the Azerbaijani model of formalizing economic activity in informal settlements was presented. The speakers emphasized that joint efforts of the state and society and systematic reforms play a crucial role in addressing the problem of informal settlements.
