News agencies: Artificial intelligence can create a mass wave of fake news
Warsaw, June 16, AZERTAC
The Polish Press Agency (PAP) has hosted the fifth Future Media Conference in Warsaw.
Heads and representatives of the leading European news agencies, including the representative of Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) were present at the conference.
The conference focused on disinformation and "information warfare," as well as the threat posed by artificial intelligence.
President of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), Chairman of the board of directors and CEO of APA - Austria Press Agency (Vienna) Clemens Pig emphasized that artificial intelligence can also have an effect in terms of spreading the fake news. "There is a danger of spreading fake news using artificial intelligence. This is a big threat to our societies," he said.
According to him, therefore, news agencies should work together and try to prevent fake news by sharing their knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence.
The press agencies really decide what goes into the media, we (press agencies - PAP) are the source of information," said President of the Polish Press Agency (PAP) Wojciech Surmacz
"Our information feeds the entire media ecosystem. We are probably most responsible for the quality of information and for how this information is perceived."
The PAP president added that since the start of Russia's war on Ukraine in 2014, the media have been dealing with a wave of false information about what is happening in Ukraine and Poland.
"We have to fight it and explain to the whole world who we are and what we are like," he said.
The event was addressed by Secretary General of EANA Alexandru Giboi, Director General of Bulgaria's BTA Agency Kiril Valchev, editor-in-chief of the ELTA news agency Vytautas Bruveris, Italian ANSA’s Head of Digital and International Marketing and Sales Department Luigi Silvestri, Editor-in-Chief of the Foreign Department of the National News Agency of Ukraine—Ukrinform Nataliia Kostina and others.
