Baku, April 18, AZERTAC
Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with the visiting New Caledonian delegation led by Chair of the Congress Committee on Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Sustainable Development, Energy, Transport and Communications Naisseline Omayra.
Sahiba Gafarova described the visit of the New Caledonian parliamentary delegation to Azerbaijan as an indicator of the mutual interest and intention for the development of cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries. In this regard, the Speaker expressed her optimism that the meetings and discussions to be held during the visit would be favourable for solidifying relations between the parliaments.
The sides mentioned the ample opportunities for the development of relations, with particular emphasis on the importance of establishing a robust legal framework for cooperation. They also deliberated on the establishment of friendship groups in parliaments, reciprocal visits, and fostering cooperation between legislative bodies' committees and commissions.
In response, N. Omaira highlighted the tragic plight of the Kanak people, the indigenous residents of New Caledonia, who have endured 170 years of French colonial rule. She emphasized that the persistent human rights violations, ongoing pressures, persecutions, and electoral irregularities witnessed in recent years are all components of a deliberate policy implemented by the French government against New Caledonia.
She expressed her gratitude for Azerbaijan's support to New Caledonia.
Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Parliament Sahiba Gafarova shed light on the initiatives the country put forward during its NAM presidency, as well as the activities of the Baku Initiative Group, established during Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Parliamentary Network created at the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev in 2021.
Chair of the New Caledonian Congress Committee, Naisseline Omayra, underscored the climate change challenges her country is confronting, expressing optimism about the potential contribution of the Baku-hosted COP29 to addressing global climate change problems.
