Eden Hazard may have recorded his most profitable season in terms of goals and assists combined but Chelsea`s no.10 is clear what real success in 2018/19 looks like. It is carrying silverware off the pitch on Wednesday night having defeated Arsenal in Baku.
The Belgian playmaker describes the season as a 50/50 one in terms of satisfaction with how it has gone but he is pleased with the close to the campaign, with third place in the Premier League achieved, and having narrowly missed out in the Carabao Cup final the chance remains to add this season’s Europa League to his trophy collection.
‘For me a good season is not if I score 40 goals, at the end I want to win something,’ Hazard states.
‘If we win the Europa League this season can still be good. Okay, it is not perfect because you want to compete in the Premier League and in the FA Cup but the way we are playing, we have been improving for two months. We had some bad news with injuries but we are strong mentally and if in Baku we have a good approach to the game we can do something good.
‘It is a European competition, so for me, for the club, for the manager and for the fans it is something important,’ he adds.
‘When you play a final, it does not matter whether it is the Champions League, Europa League or League Cup, you just want to win, you just want to bring the trophy back home and you want to celebrate that.
‘We lost the final of the Carabao Cup three months ago and at end a good season is a season of trophies so we go for that.’
Injury forced Hazard to miss the Europa League final win back in 2013 at the end of his first season at Chelsea, so there is the chance to make up for that against Arsenal this week and when he thinks back to start of his time in England, he acknowledges the Gunners were one of many top Premier League clubs interested in his signature. Now he says he could not contemplate playing for another team in England.
His future continues to be much discussed. He says there is nothing to report as nothing has happened on that front but if this week’s final is to be his last Chelsea game then the opportunity is there to finish in style.
‘I cannot play for another club in the country [England],’ he says. ‘No chance. I am a Blue!
‘I just want to win the trophy, that’s it. It does not matter the game or if I score, I just want to bring back the trophy and if it is the last game, I hope to bring the trophy back.’
