Baku, June 21 (AZERTAC). A strong earthquake today occurred in the Santa Cruz Islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean with M 6.1-6.2. This earthquake was not reported felt or damaging in the epicentral area.

This earthquake occurred during a strong solar flare of C7.7 which began about half an hour earlier when the Santa Cruz Islands were sub-solar (near local noon) and the effects of solar flares are maximized.

This is the strongest solar flare in the past week since an M 1.3 on June 14.

Several canary earthquakes occurred in the South Pacific yesterday and may have notified us of the possibility of a strong earthquake in this region at this time.

Events over the last 2 days have for the most part been located in Sumatra, Indonesia or areas of the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

This suggests a somewhat higher possibility of a succeeding earthquake.

Both the earthquakes in the Santa Cruz Islands and the event in Chile yesterday occurred about 10-15 degrees south of the geomagnetic equator and were probably promoted by recent geomagnetic storms.
