Professor at Wits University in South Africa: Informal settlements problem also exists in megacities
Baku, May 20, AZERTAC
“Informal settlements are more than the problem of a few underdeveloped cities. They also exist in megacities. Whether it was the modernization wave in São Paulo during the 1970s or the more recent transformations brought by economic transitions in cities such as Guangzhou and Baku, informal settlements have consistently embodied the demand for housing,” said Marie Huchzermeyer, Professor in the School of Architecture and Planning at Wits University in South Africa, during the event titled “Transforming Informal Settlements and Slums for Housing the World” held within WUF13.
According to her, many cities are unable to expand their housing stock and provide populations with access to land plots equipped with public utilities.
