Stefan Priesner: 400 million people to move to urban centers in India over next 20 years
Baku, May 20, AZERTAC
“Currently, approximately 500 million people live in India’s urban centers,” stated Stefan Priesner, UN Resident Coordinator in India, during his speech at a session titled “Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and Urban Green Transformation for Sustainable Urban Development” held within the framework of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
He noted that over the next 20 years, an additional 400 million people in India are projected to migrate to urban centers.
“Urban planning constitutes one of the highest priorities on the country’s agenda, and large-scale programs are being implemented in this field. These include some of the world’s largest social and affordable housing initiatives. Over the past few years, 12.5 million affordable social housing units have been constructed, and the construction of an additional 10 million housing units has been approved,” he noted.
