UNITED NATIONS SHOULD CONSIDER THOSE UNSETTLED CONFLICTS ON THE OSCE AGENDA, ILGAR MAMMADOV, OFFICIAL OF AZERBAIJAN’S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE AT UN
Ilgar Mammadov, official of Azerbaijan’s permanent representative office at the United Nations, said at Security Council 5776th meeting November 6 that with an aim to give a new impetus to the peace processes and final settlement of conflicts on the OSCE agenda, the United Nations should consider those unsettled conflicts. The consideration of those conflicts in the General Assembly would have a positive impact on existing negotiations.
He said that, as a result of Armenia’s occupation, some parts of his country were beyond the Government’s control, which had led to “black holes” where significant amounts of armament had been deployed, which was a matter of concern. That and other problems confirmed that there was room for expansion of the cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations.
He noted that the United Nations cooperation with regional and subregional organizations had significantly increased, as shown by the establishment of the hybrid force in Darfur, the European Union operation in Chad, NATO’s activities in Afghanistan and Kosovo, and the OAS support for Haiti. The United Nations was committed to helping build the capacities of regional and subregional organizations for peacekeeping tasks in their region.
Secretary-General, attending the meeting, said UN Partnerships with Organizations are strong and active. He added that UN enabled regional organizations to make more rapid response to crises and more effective response to post-conflict peacebuilding processes.
