Airlines cancel more than 500 flights from Chicago
Baku, January 13 (AZERTAC). Airlines have canceled more than 500 flights today in anticipation of the season`s biggest storm, which is forecast to dump up to 8 inches of snow throughout metro Chicago.
Southwest Airlines suspended operations between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., a move that canceled about 100 flights out of Midway International Airport as snow started falling, the Chicago Department of Aviation said in a news release. The carrier plans to resume full operations at 6 p.m. Other airlines operating out of Midway also have canceled flights.
United Airlines and other carriers have canceled more than 400 flights out of O`Hare International Airport.
United Continental Holdings Inc. has offered to waive change fees for passengers scheduled to fly today on United or Continental airlines flights out of O`Hare.
Metra has said that, if needed, it will add a limited number of trains this afternoon if workers begin their commutes earlier than usual to avoid accumulating snow.
The National Weather Service on Wednesday began warning Chicago residents of an impending storm that would bring heavy snow and winds between 9 a.m. today and 9 a.m. Friday.
