ANAMA hosts second stage of mine clearance in Jeyranchol
Baku, July 8 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) has started today the second phase of Jeyranchol Clearance Project.
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov and representatives of the accredited diplomatic corps in Azerbaijan.
The first phase of the ANAMA-NATO/NSPA Partnership for Peace Trust Fund Project “Jeyranchol Clearance Project” on the clearance of 19 square kilometres area was officially confirmed by NATO on October 4, 2011. The United States of America has taken the role of the Lead Nation for this project. The Government of Azerbaijan contributed 50% of the total budget of the project.
During the first phase of the project lasted 28 months, 19 square meters area was fully cleared and 14 578 UXO were found and disarmed.
The second 24-month phase of the project started and it is intended to conduct clearance operations in 23.585.545 square meter area.
Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov and NATO Support Agency (NSPA) General Manager Mike Lyden as well as the representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan will attend the conference dedicated to the results of the first phase in Baku.
Jeyranchol area located in the north-western part of the country along the Azerbaijani-Georgian border was intensively used as a testing and training area of the former Soviet Army in 1955-1991s.
