Azerbaijani MFA issues statement on country`s non-permanent membership in UN Security Council
Baku, October 25 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan will be a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council during 2012-2013. In this period Azerbaijan will hold in turn a Security Council presidency during a month.
Azerbaijan`s Foreign Affairs Ministry is preparing the two-year activity plan in the Security Council.
Moreover, Azerbaijan is going to put forward new projects on inter-civilization dialogue, aid to underdeveloped countries and other humanitarian issues.
Azerbaijan scored 155 votes in the balloting from United Nations Member States in the General Assembly.
Azerbaijan is the first country in the South Caucasus and Central Asia to be elected as a member of the UN Security Council. Azerbaijan`s success coincides with United Nations Day.
UN Security Council (UNSC) is one of the principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. Its powers, outlined in the United Nations Charter, include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions, and the authorization of military action. UNSC has five permanent and ten non-permanent members.
