CONFERENCE ON REFORMS IN AZERBAIJANI JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM STARTED IN BAKU
The conference on the reforms in Azerbaijani juvenile justice system, organized by UN High Commissioner on Human Rights (UNHCHR), UNICEF and the Alliance of the Non-governmental Organization for Child Rights started on Wednesday in Excelsior hotel in Baku.
The event brought together the officials of the government and representatives of the law-enforcement bodies and the international organizations.
UNICEF Baku office Mrs. Hanaa Singer informed about successful reforms being implemented in Azerbaijan’s juvenile justice system over the past years. She noted that is it necessary to create the working group to speed up these reforms.
Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Mr. Asgar Alakbarov informed about the work done to protect the children’ rights in Azerbaijan. Mr. Alakbarov noted that Psychosociology Rehabilitation Center and the Clinics for Rights of Children were opened in Baku.
Deputy Minister of Justice Mr. Togrul Musayev underscored that number of juvenile crime cases were reduced by 130 as compared to 2005. 70% of the children escaped the punishment by attracting to the public works.
Head of OSCE Office in Baku Mr. Jose Louise Herrero Ansola noted that OSCE supports the projects being implemented in Azerbaijan’s juvenile justice system.
The meeting participants were also informed about the results of the pilot program “Reforms in Juvenile Justice System for 2007-2008”.
