Baku, May 23 (AZERTAC). Gallo-Roman Museum, located in the Belgian town of Tongeren, he was awarded the European Museum of the Year. This was reported on the website of the European Museum Forum.

Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongerene appeared in 1954. However, site institution states that its history started in the middle of the XIX century. It was then the Royal Historical and Archaeological Society Tongeren beginning to excavate and collect items related to the history of the region. For the first time gathered together a collection has been shown to the public as early as 1854.

In 2006 construction began on the new museum building. It lasted several years, which allowed the establishment to receive the award "European Museum of the Year." The fact that, under existing conditions, to claim the reward may be just the new museums that are open no later than two years ago, or museums that have passed during the last two years upgrading.

The prize "European Museum of the Year" awarded in 1977. It was founded by archaeologist Kenneth Hudson. In 2010, the winner of the award has become a museum-aquarium Ozeaneum from the German city of Stralsund.
