11TH EURASIAN ECONOMIC SUMMIT CONTINUED WITH REMARKS BY EX-LEADERS
The 11th Eurasian Economic Summit organized by the Marmara Group for Strategic and Social Research Foundation continued May 2 in Istanbul with the discussions, which began with a special session in which five “sagacious” European statesmen had the floor. Demirel, ninth president of Turkey, Ion Iliescu, the former president of Romania, Jelyu Jelev, the former President of Bulgaria; Emil Constantinescu, the former president of Romania, and Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the former prime minister of Bulgaria, contributed to a special session titled “A global overview of Europe and beyond in 2008.”
The importance of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzerum oil and gas pipelines as ell as Nabucco project was stressed during discussions.
During the session titled “International Values in Eurasian Economics,” Azerbaijan Minister of Emergency Situations Kamaleddin Heydarov stated that national leader Heydar Aliyev`s returning to power helped to get out of crisis the country faced during first years of independence. According to him, President Ilham Aliyev`s successful domestic and foreign policy contributed to increasing international prestige of Azerbaijan and achieving high economic growth rates.
Heydarov pointed out that Armenia`s aggression against Azerbaijan had a negative impact on Eurasian integration.
The topics including “International Cooperation in Tourism and Cultural Relations,” “Eurasian Economic Cooperation” and “Black Sea Economic Cooperation and Its Role in Eurasian Relations” were also on the agenda of the second day of the meeting.
