Australian scientists produce new Alzheimer`s vaccine
Baku, December 12 (AZERTAC). Patients suffering from Alzheimer`s disease can soon find some good news because of the efforts put in by Australian scientists from University of Sydney.
Yes, in their recent statement on Saturday, the researchers have announced about developing a newest vaccine that could help halt the progression of Alzheimer`s disease of humans in a joint race.
According to the researchers, the new developed vaccine actually directly targets the damaged protein that is present inside brain`s nerve cell (and is known as tau).
This action further prevents any continuity in neurofibrillary tangling in the brain of a mouse suffering with Alzheimer`s disease.
Estimates say that the progress of neurodegenerative condition today is affecting more than 35 million people worldwide. Thus, Associate Professor Lars Ittner, from the Alzheimer`s and Parkinson`s disease Laboratory led the research team at the University of Sydney`s Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI) to run a study and produce the most effective medicine that could serve the patients of Alzheimer`s disease.
Professor Ittner clearly mentioned in his statement that the vaccine was tested in mice with Alzheimer`s and has shown positive results by stopping the disease from progressing. Moreover, this study is the first one that has showed that a vaccine targeting the tau protein is very effective once the disease has already set in.
"Most of the other vaccines targeting tau were tested only before or around the onset of the disease in animal models, but the vast majority of people with Alzheimer`s disease are only diagnosed after the symptoms have appeared", Professor Ittner said.
Ittner further talked about his team`s partnering with a major pharmaceutical company to develop the vaccine for human trials and that too within next five years.
