Most expensive airport transfers revealed
Baku, April 25 (AZERTAC). A taxi from the main international airport serving the Japanese capital into the city centre could set you back almost £200, the study indicated.
The 41-mile journey, was not however, the most expensive when ranked on cost by distance travelled. That slot fell to Copenhagen, where a five-mile trip costs an average of £34.08, which works out at £6.82 per mile.
The research ranked the cost of taxi journeys from major international airports in Europe and the rest of the world, to city centres, including some popular destinations for British holidaymakers.
In Europe, researchers found the overall most expensive taxi ride from the airport was from Oslo Gardermoen airport, with a journey costing £73.45.
Taxis from Sofia airport in Bulgaria to the city centre were the most affordable, at £2.17, followed by Bucharest in Romania (£4.79), and Istanbul (£6.01).
Beyond Europe, the cheapest airport to city centre taxi rides are found at Delhi`s Indira Ghandi International, costing just £2.69 for the 10-mile journey. At Thailand`s Suvernabhumi airport to Bangkok central, an 18-mile taxi ride costs £5.63.
Only overseas airports were included in the study. Taxis from Heathrow would have figured fifth in the most expensive table (see below), with a 15-mile journey costing an average of around £57.
The research was carried out by Moneycorp, a currency exchange company.
Per kilometer the taxi journey from Narita costs $4.42, but is not the priciest by distance. That dubious honor goes to Copenhagen. Despite being only 8 kilometers from the city center of the Danish capital, an average taxi fare from the airport cost $50 ($6.50 per kilometer). Geneva in Switzerland is the next most expensive fare per kilometer.
Visitors to Oslo`s Gardermoen airport and Milan`s Malpensa will also have to budget in high transfer costs; the Norwegian capital and Italian city costing visitors $112 and $106 respectively to reach the city center. Both cities are over 40 kilometers from the airports.
Tokyo`s main international airport is 66 kilometers (41 miles) from the city, explaining a large part of the expense. Despite a weakening currency, making the journey almost 10% cheaper than at the same time last year, Japan remains an expensive destination for many visitors.
"It`s interesting that some of the biggest variations in taxi costs are in mainland Europe," said Tracey Tivnan of Moneycorp in a press statement.
"For example, the taxi fare from Milan Malpensa airport to the city center will cost you more than £70 ($106). This compares to just £2.17 ($3.30) from Sofia airport to the center of Sofia."
Elsewhere, of the popular destinations surveyed the cheapest airport taxi fares can be found in Asia.
The traffic-choked ride into Delhi costing on average $4.10, and Bangkok, $8.58.
