PARLIAMENT HEARINGS HELD ON COMBATING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Under the Council of Europe`s campaign Combat Domestic Violence against Women, parliamentary hearings “Legal Aspects of Protection from Violence in Family Relations” took place Monday in the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan.
Hearings are attended by representatives of government agencies and Baku offices of the Council of Europe and OSCE.
Chairman of the Milli Majlis standing commission on legal policy and state building Ali Huseynov told of the nature of the problem.
Deputy MM Speaker Bahar Muradova said quite a few legal documents on gender equality and human rights had been adopted in Azerbaijan. Milli Majlis ratified a lot of international conventions and brought national legislation in line with requirements of these documents.
Head of the CoE Baku Office Denis Bribosia said the domestic violence is the global problem and CoE has been conducting this campaign since 2006.
Bribosia praised the work Azerbaijan has done so far in this field. He highlighted the measures to strengthen legislation, stop domestic violence against women and safeguard human rights.
Kristiina Ojuland, Deputy Speaker of the Estonian Parliament, provided information about the situation in this sphere in her country. She said 500 women become victims of human trafficking every year and 285 women suffer from physical and sex violence. According to her, commissioner for gender equality has been appointed to prevent this kind of facts.
Jeyhun Garajayev, expert of the Milli Majlis standing commission on legal policy and state building reported on domestic violence, and comparative analysis on the situation in Azerbaijan and other countries.
The new bill on prevention of domestic violence is to be submitted to the Milli Majlis for consideration.
